2010 marks the sixteenth year of Intertribal COUP's work toward bringing GigaWatts of clean energy online by building utility-scale renewable power installations on tribal lands.
A key challenge for building out the full potential of one of the richest wind regimes in the world- Indian Country is known as the 'Saudi Arabia of wind energy'- is the need to bring effective innovation and broad program strengthening to our renewable energy 'green collar' workforce training programs. This need ranges from community straw bale and energy retro-fit employment to corporate wind and solar needs for well-trained regional tribal workforces.
Another challenge COUP works to meet is allowing the wind resources of Indian Country to be harvested efficiently through equitable legislation regarding wind investment policy. Modernizing key statutes will recognize and support renewable energy's profound systemic values (environment, employment, security) unique among solutions to long term energy needs.
